Neapolitan school, circa 1810.
Vessels on the Key Side at Naples during the Napoleonic Occupation.
Oil on canvas
11.1/4 x 16.7/8 in. (28.1/2 x 43.2 cm.)
It is unclear whether this work was painted by an Italian or a French hand though it remains a charmingly naïve depiction from a small window in time when napoleon occupied Naples from 1806. It is clear to see the lines of Vesuvius on the right hand side. And a variety of military men patrolling the key with the flag of France hoisted on the battlements
