Natural Bridge, aquatint with original colour by J.C. Stadler after the work by William Roberts; published circa 1808, framed and glazed, within a modern copy of a Hogarth type frame. o.s: 25 in x 34.75 in

Thomas Jefferson, American Founding Father and third President of the United States (1801–1809), considered the Natural Bridge and the passage of the Potomac River through the Blue Ridge Mountains at Harpers Ferry, to be two of the most incredible natural sites in America and described them as "monuments of a war between rivers and mountains, which must have shaken the earth to its center". As  President, Jefferson received oil paintings of these two wonders as a gift from the artist William Roberts, who also sent two copies of this engraving.
