BADA Gift List - Under £1000Naive Sailorwork Painting: HMS Thetis in Grand Harbour, Port Elmo, Malta.
Thetis is the Goddess of water in Greek mythology.
Lanuched on the River Thames in 1782, the 5th rate vessel had a complemet of 261 and weighed 954 tonnes.
The Red Ensign can be seen and was worn by British merchant vessels from the early part of the 17th century. At this time the Cross of St George was placed in the canton. After the Act of Union in 1707 this was replaced by the Union Flag.
14 Dec 1802 the Thetis arrived in Gibraltar with 250 invalids from Malta, en route for England. She reports that the Resistance arrived in Malta before she departed with the news that the British were to remain in occupation of Malta and not the recently arrived Neapolitan troops, who it was surmised would be sent back, "which excited much joy amongst the natives."
England, circa 1805.
