Molyneux, 42 Lombard Street, London

A fine and original mahogany two-day marine chronometer signed on the 3-inch silvered dial Molyneux, 42 Lombard St, London. No 849. Original blued steel hour and minute hands with subsidiary dials for seconds and state of wind . The chain fusee spotted movement signed with cut bimetallic balance, blued steel helical balance spring and Earnshaw-type spring detent. Milled brass bezel with glass. The 3-tier mahogany box has brass handles to the sides, brass corners and a bone plaque. Original tipsy winding key.

Henry Molyneux (born c.1807)

After working with his father Robert Moyneux, who was apprenticed to the great Thomas Earnshaw, Henry set up in business with his brother and traded as R & H Molyneux. In 1840 Henry set up on his own and traded from 42 Lombard Street, London. Sadly the business struggled and he was declared bankrupt in 1841. Henry sailed for America and arrived in New York in July 1841. The date of his death is not known.
