Mid 17th century Spanish gilded papier mache mirror.

1640 to 1680 Spain.

This charming small mirror has survived in extraordinary condition with its original gilding and mirror plate which is very unusual particularly for a piece made from a delicate medium such as papier mâché. The papier mâché creates a softness which cannot be achieved with wood carving which is particularly evident in the masks which are very realistic. The gilding has developed a beautiful lustrous patina over time.

Surmounted with a cresting with two birds either side of a stylised scroll ‘H” with gadrooning and incised detailing. Projecting vases of flowers in each corner with masks below. The shaped sides with scrolling and acanthus leaves and incised detailing. The base with a stylised six petal flowerhead supported by a similar stylised leaf arrangement. The original mirror plate enclosed within a moulded frame. Lustrous patina and original gilding. Mid-17th century.
