Mid-16th century embroidered and silk appliqué panel of velvet, English, circa 1540-60.
The claret silk velvet ground applied with woven silks in shades of ivory and gold, with silk and couched gilt metal threads, designed with crowned masks framed by leafy-scrolls, supported by paired winged mermaids, each tail with a mythical beast-head scroll terminal, joined by small winged cherub masks, the whole on a later burgundy velvet panel, backed and ringed for hanging.
