The Tureen stands on a circular pedestal foot which is decorated with a wide band of lobing. The large baluster shaped main body rises to an everted lobed rim and displays a beaded girdle around the upper section. The Tureen displays two substantial reed and scroll side handles, attached to the main body with acanthus foliage.

The stepped "pull-off" cover displays another wide band of lobing and terminates in an unusual leaf and berry finial with bead collar. The Tureen is in quite excellent condition and is fully marked on the foot, main body and cover. The main body is engraved with a contemporary Crest, Armorial and banner containing the Motto "Virtus Sola Nobilitas".

The cover is engraved with the same Crest and Motto. The Arms, Crest and Motto are those of Barker of County Berkshire, specifically for Thomas Barker of Sonning Deanery. The Barker's were a fabulously wealthy family who sadly lost their estates due to extravagant electioneering expenses.

The Tureen, most unusually, possesses a most magnificent stand which was also made by Matthew Boulton in Birmingham in 1811. The stand has two raised scroll carrying handles, decorated with acanthus and palm foliage.

The rim is decorated with lobing and the stepped centre displays a bead border which is held in place by silver bolts on the underside. The border is engraved with the same Crest, as is seen on the cover and main body.

This piece is in excellent condition and is also fully marked on the underside.

Tureens, with stands, are not common and this could be used for soup, punch, flowers or a beautifully decorative centrepiece. It is without doubt a "Tour De Force" of Regency design.

Work by Matthew Boulton is scarce and this must be one of the largest pieces from his workshops to come onto the market in many years.

He was a particularly famous, designer, silversmith and inventor, of the finest quality, at this date. His importance is further emphasised by the fact thst he is featured today on the current £ 50 note.
