Very rare Chinese woodblock map fan titled Da Qing Yitong Nian San Sheng Yudi Quan Tu (Map of the Empire of the Unified twenty-three provinces of the Great Qing), depicting:

• on the front and at the centre China with the Great Wall snaking across north western provinces, the island of Hainan in the south, Taiwan, the Korean peninsula and Japan in the east. The map of the world inset on the lower left:

• on the back the map of 19th century Qing dynasty China with a list of the provinces, distances between towns and information about their major towns and cities.

Fan in Chinese paper (a combination of bamboo and mulberry pulp).

Handle made out of bamboo.

Probably Shanghai, dated c. 1870, Qing dynasty.

◆ These maps were produced only on the Emperor’s orders to be given as gifts to the foreign envoys in order to demonstrate China’s power. No one else could have made this order, only the Emperor because he was China.

◆ Translator’s note: signed by the owner of Moxiang Guan (the hall with fragrance of the ink), Shenjiang (aplace in Shanghai), painted in Lingzhi Tang (there is no exact information about where this hall was located).

• 扇子反面繪有19世紀中國清代省份列表，及標明了主要城市、鄉鎮之間的距離及相關信息。

紙本扇面（中國畫紙通常由竹子及桑樹漿果製成）。

約1870年作於上海。
