This impressive Chinese Ningxia carpet dates to the first half of the 19th century.
The centre medallion is formed by a large Shou character which stands for longevity, surrounded by a circle of cloud bands and bats, the latter being a symbol of happiness and joy. A beautifully drawn fretted dragon, usually associated with power, strength and good luck, occupies each corner of the otherwise sparsely decorated field on an apricot ground. A simple reciprocal key border is enclosed by a meandering lotus flower main border.
This is a rare carpet with real presence and in excellent condition.
Wool on a cotton foundation.
