Louis XVI Carved Gilt Wood Mercury Barometer.

Carved gilt wood Louis XVI French barometer, painted wood dial with blue ground and starburst centre. Original pointer and centrally mounted setting hand.

The dial signed 'Par Freville, Barometre, Secon Toricelli'.  After Toricelli (1608-1647), credited with the invention of the barometer after his famous experiment in 1643.

The case with floral swag decoration retains it's original gilding. Circa 1780.
