A Very Fine Louis XV Style Gilt-Bronze Mounted Petit Bureau Plat de Dame by François Linke.
French, Circa 1890.
Signed 'F. LINKE' to the gilt-bronze border.
This fine petit bureau plat de dame has a gilt-bronze banded, tooled leather writing surface above four drawers. The slim cabriole legs are headed by exceptionally fine gilt-bronze scrolling foliate mounts.
A distinctive feature of this desk is Linke's use of an acanthus formed concave scallop-shell or coquille on the central drawer with tendrils of acanthus scrolling outwards implying the shape of a crab. A notable feature of Linke's work, this impressive and individual bronze mount is perhaps even more of a guarantee than a signature.
