Condition report

A particularly fine and unusual Georgian vernacular floor standard lighting device with a finely turned steel stem surmounted by a brass urn finial and with a brass disc "stop" on the lower stem. The adjustable spring-loaded candle sconce and rush nip is still in fully functional condition and of very good quality with a handsome cylindrical sconce and refined jaws with a well engineered integral hinge. The stem is raised on a rare asymmetrical tripod base, fashioned from solid mahogany with curved legs and long slipper feet, beneath a robust section of disc turning which houses the stem. One of the tripod feet has been restored and there is evidence of much use and wear throughout, but otherwise this most unusual piece is in entirely genuine and fully functional country house condition, bearing a good historic patina to both the metal and timber elements. A rare piece of early lighting of handsome scale and individuality.
