A late Renaissance silver gilt operculum amulet.
The elaborately carved & pierced pendant is set to both sides with opercula within dogs tooth settings.
Spanish, first half of the 17th century.
The word operculum is Latin for ‘cover’, generally found in fish, birds & in this case a freshwater or marine snail. The operculum is located across the opening of the shell, so that when the snail retracts its body inside, the operculum closes as a protective barrier against predators or to avoid drying out in times of heat and drought.
Different cultures believe in different amulet properties of the operculum, however in European culture it was used to ward off the ‘Evil eye’.
