Large Japanese Bronze vase with ink-black patination and depiction of a crescent Moon (Circa 1880).
From our collection of Oriental Art, this Japanese Meiji-era (1868-1912) Bronze vase with masterful depiction and multi-patination of a crescent Moon over a rocky landscape.
The Shakudo ink-black ground of the vase is used to great effect creating a moody backdrop of a small copse of trees on an overhanging ledge of rock. Further monoliths can be seen looming out from the gloom.
The body of the vase all black save for the slither of inlaid Silver used to pick out the crescent Moon.
The real beauty of the vase can be seen when it is displayed under differing lights as this causes the landscape to be thrown into different shades creating a magical effect and a lifelike and shifting perspective on the relationship of the background and foreground.
