Large Japanese blue and white Arita dish, 17th century, decorated in the centre with fruiting branches of pomegranate and peaches amongst stylised leaves, the border with Kraak-style panels containing branches of flowers or precious objects
Diameter: 13 ¼ in. (32.8 cm.)
Condition: Restored
Notes: For a similar example see, Jorg, Christiaan, Fine and Curious: Japanese export Porcelain in Dutch Collections, Hotei: Amsterdam, 2003 (p.28.).
Although not native to Japan, pomegranates can frequently be found in Japanese ceramic design. The motif is adapted from Chinese and Islamic models: in both cultures, the fruit is a symbol of fertility and numerous children.
