Large Japanese blue and white Arita dish, 17th century, decorated in the centre with fruiting branches of pomegranate and peaches amongst stylised leaves, the border with Kraak-style panels containing branches of flowers or precious objects

Although not native to Japan, pomegranates can frequently be found in Japanese ceramic design. The motif is adapted from Chinese and Islamic models: in both cultures, the fruit is a symbol of fertility and numerous children.
