For sale is this signed large Fleetwood Varley enamel plaque depicting a river landscape, the plaque set in its original frame (currently undergoing restoration). Signed VARLEY. The reverse of the plaque states, in what I am sure is original handwriting, “ENAMEL EXECUTED FROM A SKETCH MADE AT THE BOLTON WOODS NEAR ILKLEY YORKSHIRE, BY F.C. VARLEY ”
This enamel was bought as a set of three in the 1970’s (one now lost) and is a”pair” of sorts to the Varley moonlit scene, stock number A561. Both plaques represent the finest work by Varley I have seen. The plaques are not dated but I think are probably from 1900-1910 when Varley was working with the Guild of Handicraft.
