Large British Sailor's Woolwork of Royal Navy Squadron,
Circa 1890-1910
(Ref: NY9411-ncmr)
The large sailor's woolie or woolwork depicts a fleet of five different battleships maneuvering at sea off the coast where a lighthouse is visible in the middle ground. Each ship flies the White Ensign and smoke can be seen coming from the ship's funnels. The sea is depicted in a most unusual way with scallop-shell shaped waves in shades of blue and a white wake around the ship hulls.
