A Large Black Forest Antique Mantle Clock.

Constructed in carved linden wood, fitted with a two train 8 day striking clock; mounted on a shaped serpentine base, with a moulded edge, the naturalistic ground of rockwork, tree branches, leafage and berries incorporate two retrievers and the day's bag; the huntsman, dressed for stalking, surveying the scene, surmounts the clock.

Provenance

Brienz, Bernese Oberland.

Brienz, in the Bernese Oberland, Switzerland was remarked upon in Baedeker's Travel Guide, as having a population of 2400, of whom 600 persons were employed as woodcarvers, to supply the tourist trade to Switzerland with mementos of the tour. A museum devoted entirely to the art of wood carving may be visited today.
