For sale is this outstanding Latino Movio silver vase for the firm of Johnson, Walker and Tolhurst.  It is fully assayed for London 1904 and signed L. Movio, 1904.

The vase carries a leaf and flower design, beautifully worked, and is a fine example of Movio’s skill.  The design carries through to two handles modelled on leaves.  I believe the plant may be a fritillaria.

The vase is in outstanding original condition and a very good gauge of silver.  There is a small old solder repair to the interior rim where one handle attaches which is not noticeable.  This vase is one of Movio’s finest pieces and has direct provenance back to one of the families of the Walker Tolhurst partnership.

Very little is known of Movio but it is pretty clear that he worked alongside Gilbert Marks in the 1890’s and continued to make pieces in Marks’ style after Marks’ death in 1905 for Walker Tolhurst and other leading retailers.

Movio appears in the 1911 census as an Italian ‘artist in metal repoussé’.
