A Large and Elaborately Carved Florentine Giltwood Mirror in the Baroque Revival Style.
This impressive mirror has a rectangular bevelled glass plate set within a scrolling acanthus carved frame, with a central fronded acanthus cresting and an apron centred by a stylised scallop shell.
The lightness of the design, with its smaller and tighter scrolling pointed leaves is less heavy than earlier Baroque designs and typical of Florentine carving in the late 19th century.
Please see Graham Child, World Mirrors 1650-1900, Sotheby’s Publications, 1990, p. 292, pl. 663a for a closely related Florentine mirror of this period.
Italy, Circa 1880.
