A large 16th century Norman sculpture of St George. Circa 1540.

This appealing sculpture retains large amounts of its original polychrome decoration and the oak from which it is carved has a wonderful mellow colour, it has its a original iron hook to the rear for wall mounting. A carved fleur-de-lys emblem to the right hand side within his cape still remains.

St George has been the patron saint of England since 1222 and of several other European cities including Venice, his most famous act was saving the damsel in distress by slaying the dragon, symbolising the triumph of good and evil.
