Chinese early 18th century brushpot or Bitong made during the reign of the Emperor Kangxi at the kilns at Jingdezhen.
Painted with freedom and with excellent use of the cobalt to show different blues. the painting is of a coiled dragon sweeping down the brush pot trying to hold the flaming pearl - the fount of all knowledge.
The dragon is amongst thunderbolts and stylised ruyi headed clouds. interestingly the back of the dragon's head has the mark of nobility - single line crossed with three short lines
brush pots were an important part of the scholar's table where he would keep the calligraphic brushes and scrolls
excellent piece
