Lucas was a painter in oil and watercolour of historical subjects, portraits, genre and landscapes. He was born in London and was nephew of the portrait painter John Lucas (1807-74). He studied at the Royal Academy Schools. He was elected ARA in 1886, RA in 1898 and RI in 1877. In 1914 he was commissioned to paint a large fresco of The Flight of the Five Members 1642 for the House of Commons.
