John Ellicott, London.

A fine and impressive ebony and brass mounted George III half hour striking bracket clock by one of the finest makers of the eighteenth century. The break arch brass dial has a silvered subsidiary dial to the arch for strike-silent and a silvered chapter ring signed Ellicott London. The centre of the dial is finely matted and has a calendar aperture. Rococo spandrels to the corners and blued steel hands. The five pillar movement has a verge escapement and strikes the hours and the half hours on a separate bell. The backplate is finely engraved with foliage and is signed Ellicott London. The brass bound ebony case with flame finials and caryatids, glazed side windows with brass carrying handles above, the clock sits on beautiful cast brass Rococo feet.

John Ellicott (1706-1772) was one of the finest clockmakers of the 18th Century. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1738. In 1762 he was appointed Clockmaker to the King.
