Japanese map of China in native paper, assembled from six sheets, c. 1837, size 70x73 cm, 27½x28¾ in; with frame: 84x81x3 cm. 8-16081

Provenance: Floyd Sully Collection, Canada.

Illustrated; All Under Heaven: The Chinese World in Maps, Pictures and Texts from the Collection of Floyd Sully (Bruce Peel Special Collection Library, by W. Davis, p. 5

An inscription on this hand-painted map dates the work to the eighth year of the Tenpō, which was the second of three eras in the reign of Japan’s Nikō emperor (1800-1846, reigned 1817-1837). However the political geography that it renders is that of China’s Ming dynasty (1368-1644), which fell to Manchu invaders in 1644. In addiction to depicting the thirteen province of the Ming, the map draws attention to areas that played a role in the Ming’s relations with non-Han peoples. (All Under Heaven).
