Japanese imari charger, circa 1700, decorated to the central roundel with a tasselled curtain drawn to reveal hyacinth and boughs of cherry issuing from rockwork, encircled by three cartouches with iron-red floral design in reserve against a dark blue band with gilt foliate scroll, the wide rim with two large Japanese phoenix in flight amongst peony and chryasnthemum, their wings outstretched and tail feathers spread out across the surface of the charger; the rim with two shaped cartouches containing further scrolling peony against a gold ground, the reverse with a spray each of chrysanthemum, peony and plum to the rim, concentric circles in underglaze cobalt blue and ten spur marks to the base
