Signed Asakura Yoshihara Chu
Meiji Period - Late 19th Century
For hundreds of years there had been a huge industry centred around the Samurai elite, whose weapons, armour and other accoutrements were ornamented with lacquer and gilded bronze mounts. However, with the opening of trade to the west and demise of the Samurai the creative artists and craftsmen began to produce charming naturalistic sculptures for the European market.
