Japanese blue and white Arita vase circa 1680, painted in a bright underglaze blue, the body with a continuous scene of peonies and flowering shrubs beneath a shoulder band of karakusa scrolls, the rim with lappets, the lid with further flowering plants and a finial of a flattened disc shape.
