James Watson (1851-1936) was a landscape and figure painter in oil and watercolour and art teacher at Newcastle Grammar School until 1919. Born in  Newcastle, Watson later attended South Kensington School of Art.

He was a regular exhibitor with the Bewick Club, Newcastle and in 1900 he sent one work to the Royal Academy. By 1903 he had started to exhibit with the Staithes Art Club. He lived and painted on the North Yorkshire coast until 1930.

The present painting "Runswick Bay" is a lovely example of his work. Measuring 8" x 11", it is signed, inscribed "Runswick Bay" and dated (19)10. It is framed in a gilt frame giving an overall size of 14"x 17".
