For sale is this rare “roman flask” James Powell and sons decanter.  The design of the glass body based on roman flask with a silver top.  Fully assayed for James Powell & sons.  These tops were originally made by William Hutton & Sons for James Powell, but after Powell registered their own mark in October 1903, it is thought production moved to the Guild of Handicraft. The glass and silver are in excellent original condition.

An image of the claret jug appears in Whitefriars Glass: Art of James Powell & Son edited by Lesley Jackson.  James Powell and Sons were famous glass makers who were renowned at the end of the 19th century and for much of the 20th century for both their stained and artistic glass.  Harry Powell was their leading designer around 1900.  More information on the firm can be found here.
