James Lees Bilbie was born in Nottingham in 1860. From 1904-31 he was assistant curator at the Nottingham Castle Museum and during this period showed there and at the RBSA, Manchester City Art Gallery and the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.

The present painting "Loch Katrine & Ben Venue" is an oil painting on canvas measuring 10"x 14". It is signed lower left and is framed in a gilt frame giving an overall size of 17"x 21".
