James Kay.

"Whistle-Field" Scotland. Watercolour.

Born on October 22nd 1858 on the Isle of Arran, Scotland, James Kay went on to study at the Glasgow School of Art. He began exhibiting at the Paris Salon in 1894 and won the gold medal at the Salon in 1903 for his painting "River of the North". Kay was elected to the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in watercolour (RSW)  in 1906 and to the Royal Scottish Academy in 1938.

He was also a member of the Glasgow Art Cub with which he exhibited many times. The present painting is a lovely quality gouache painting by Kay and is signed lower right and inscribed with the title "Whistle-Field" (a view near the artist's home) lower left. It is mounted into it's original gilt frame giving an overall size of 15"x19". There is a nice old label for "Daniel Miller, 162a, Bath Street, Glasgow", on the reverse.
