An early seventeenth century bodkin with ear scoop made in c1615 by Martin Hewett of London ( active 1613 -1623).The bodkin has the typical naive decoration of the period and is in generally good condition ( some twisting and distortion near end). The makers mark of MH intertwined has been attributed to the specialist spoonmaker Martin Hewett(active 1613- 23)- he was apprenticed to one of the most famous spoonmakers of the Sixteenth century William Cawdell.Bodkins were used to thread yarn through all types of clothing. The small scoop at the end was used to pick out ear wax to facilitate the smoothing of the thread. The original owners initials W T are engraved on the stem.
