A fine and rare early seventeenth century bodkin with ear scoop made in c1615 by Martin Hewett of London ( active 1613 - 1623 ).The bodkin has the typical naive engraving of the period and is in good condition. This very early piece of silver bears the makers mark of
MH intertwined which has been attributed to the specialist spoonmaker Martin Hewett ( active 1613-1623)who was apprenticed to one of the sixteenth centuries most famous spoon makers William Cawdell.Bodkins were used to thread yarn through all types of clothing.The small scoop at the end was used to scoop out ear wax to facilitate the smoothing of the thread.
