A James I / Charles I oak heraldic panel, circa 1620-35.

Designed as a unicorn rampant, modelled standing on haunches, gorged and with a chain wrapped around its body, within a leafy-arcade, framed.

This mythical beast, representing purity and innocence combined with power and ferocity, has been a symbol of Scottish royalty since William I (c.1142-1214) and adopted as a supporter of the English Royal Coat of Arms after James IV of Scotland (1567-1625) succeeded to the English throne as James I (1603-1625). The chains around this powerful beast and crown around its neck show it has been brought under the command of the monarch.
