AN IVORY-AND-BONE-INLAID AFRICAN EBONY 'LAMU' CHAIR (KITA CHAENZI - CHAIR OF POWER).

Lamu/Zanzibar/Mombasa, 18th / 19th Century.

129 cm high, 77 cm wide and 52.5 cm deep.

The chair is composed of rectangular elements, with lavish inlaid back splat. The openings in the back splat, arm rests and seating are stringed with cord. They were well suited to convey their owner’s political power and economic status. 

Similar examples can be found in the Art Institute of Chicago and Peabody Essex Museum.

This object incorporates old ivory and has been registered with Defra
