Grand Tour intaglios, set of 37 plaster intaglios, each mounted and displayed within gilt carved mounts, the original walnut display case with blue paper lining and detachable lid.
Italian, circa 1780 - 1820.
Case: Height 7.5” (19cm) Width 6” (16cm).
Plaster intaglios were inspired by intaglios carved into semi-precious stones and hardstones, which were traditionally used for signing messages and sealing letters. Intaglios grew in popularity during the time of the Grand Tour and were highly demanded by the wealthy aristocrats, consequently, artists created plaster intaglios, which acted as souvenirs of their travels in addition to being a reminder of the superb artworks and decorative pieces they had encountered all around the continent.
