Italian Baroque Iron Strongbox.

Dates: circa 1650.

Dimensions:

58.00cm high (22.83 inches high).
109.00cm wide (42.91 inches wide).
65.00cm deep (25.59 inches deep).

Description / Expertise:

Magnificent and rare, Italian, baroque, iron, 1” thick, strongbox or safe with original 16 bolt lock, chased plate, 3 keys.

- Stunning 1” thick, iron strongbox, impenetrable with massive lock and holes in the base where it has been bolted to the floor serving as a safe for centuries
- Characteristic of Italian strongboxes decorated with classical, bold, floral studwork centered inside 8 panels on the top and front and four on each side and along the strapwork. The front with brass escutcheon and the lid with tow brass lifting handles. Three hidden keyholes and keys in the lid.
- The original sixteen bolt lock partly revealed and the finely chased original plate with leafy sprays. Later, probably 19th century adaptation to the lock to create an additional opening most likely because the original key was lost.
- Documents and private papers are recorded as being kept in strong boxes, which were also used to safeguard other items of personal value and money. They serve very well as modern safes.
-This is the most secure and robust strongbox I have handled over the years.
- Provenance : Roman Collection
