Indo-Portuguese Carved Jacaranda Cabinet on Stand.

With an arrangement of five drawers with nine simulated moulded fronts applied with pierced steel escutcheon plates. The stand with a deep shaped apron carved and pierced with interlocking leafy scrolls and foliage. Raised on swollen baluster supports with spirally-turned lower sections joined by conforming stretchers. Some elements of the carved frieze restored.

Made in India under Portuguese patronage, the dating of such furniture is aided by comparisons with European pieces. Cabinets such as these with many drawers were popular in the second half of the 17th century and had a wide range of intarsia, inlaid decoration or intricately pierced mounts, frequently of cast brass.

A comparable cabinet on stand (contador) is housed in the Museu Nacional Machado de Castro, Portugal.
