These extremely rare, possibly unique, silver gilt candlesticks are cast and stand on domed Rococo bases decorated with swirling scrolls.

The main shaft is beautifully modelled as a Medieval Knight, in full armour, with a sword by his side and holding a baton in one hand.

Each Knight displays their face through an open helmet, with plumes at the rear. Each also holds a foliate sprig in their gauntlet covered hand to which is attached the circular candle socket decorated with a lower band of acanthus foliage and berries.

Unusually the candle sockets can be removed for cleaning. Both items are in excellent condition and display a beautiful shade of gilding.

The candlesticks are fully marked on the bases and on the sockets.

The Fox Brothers made figural pieces, however we have never seen any examples modelled as Knights in armour, which leads us to believe that they may have been a special commission.

We think, because of their size, that they may well have been used on a desk or mantlepiece. Their outstanding condition, leads us to conclude that they have had little use over the years.

The Fox brothers were known for their quality of design and production and were thought of as the last great silversmith partnership, before the arrival of Victorian mass production.
