An Extremely rare Elizabeth I Silver Beaker, made in London in 1589 by H L (conjoined). The beaker is secular sixteenth century rather than religious. This exceptional beaker has an engraved upper border and stands on a chased foot. There is just an almost imperceptible hint of gilt on the upper band.
There is a very similar example in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Provenance of which is, Robert Temple Frere (until 1962 : sale, Christie’s, London March 28, 1962 lot 52; sold for £2,400.00 to Phillips);[ S. J. Phillips Ltd., 1962; sold on April 9, 1962 to Irwin Untermyer ] ; Irwin Untermyer (1962-68: to MMA).
Irwin Untermyer became known as an avid collector and promoter of art and antiquities. Untermyer donated extensively to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and maintained a lifelong association with the museum.
He served on the Board of Trustees for 20 years and bequeathed over 2,000 pieces from his collection upon his death. Pieces donated by Untermyer constitute "one of the world's great private collections" and are on permanent display in the museum.
