An important portrait of the race horse Veles, winner of the Princess of Wales stakes in 1902.

This painting, by Henry Frederick Lucas Lucas, is on a considerably larger scale than usual from this artist and was probably commissioned by the owner to mark this success.

Signed lower right by the artist, H.F. Lucas Lucas and dated 1902, and in script to the reverse 'Veles by Isinglass-Veleda. Painted by H.F. Lucas Lucas Rugby September 1902'.

Within a fine rosewood frame of the period with gilt sight, o.s: 41.75 in x 33.5 in

Long lived, from 1848 to 1943, Lucas Lucas painted a number of hunting scenes, especially of the Pytchley. Earl Beatty was one of his patrons and Forres published several of his works as prints.
