A High Quality Partners Library Table By H Samuel of Oxford Street.
The Design by Thomas Chippendale
Constructed in mahogany, of hour-glass shape, the plinth base having stiff-leaf carved mouldings; nine cock beaded drawers with swan gilt rocaille handles and escutcheons. To the reverse, two drawers and a pair of cupboards decorated with carved floral swag. The pedestal supports dressed with lion head upright stiles, trailing bellflower-carved volutes and terminating in claw feet. The top having a tooled leather writing surface. Stamped "H Samuel 484 Oxford Street London."
English, circa 1890.
The desk is based on the Thomas Chippendale's design for a Library, illustrated in his famous 3rd edition of "The Gentlemen's & Cabinet-Maker's Director" of 1762.
H Samuel of 484 Oxford Street
Henry Samuel are recorded at this address from 1872 onwards, trading as 'dealers in works of art and furniture'. Although they are not noted as makers of furniture, they appear to have specialised in providing custom-made pieces in the Georgian style for their discerning clientele.
