Herbert Royle (1870-1958) was a British landscape painter, born in Patricroft, Lancashire. He trained at the Harris Institute in Preston and Southport school of art under John William Buxton Knight. He exhibited extensively at the Walker gallery, Liverpool, Manchester city art gallery, Royal Academy and at other Galleries and Exhibitions throughout the Country. From 1924 onwards he lived at the Manor House in the hamlet of Nesfield, near Ilkley, where he also had a studio on the hillside above the house. Some of his finest work was painted in this area around his home in Wharfedale.

The present painting "Port Dinorwic, North Wales", "Y Felinheli", is a very fine and unusual example of his work. An oil painting on canvas measuring 16"x 20", it is signed lower left and has the original inscription with the title "Port Dinorwic, North Wales" on the back. It is framed in a quality gilt frame giving an overall size of 24" x 27".

Y Felinheli, formerly known in English as Port Dinorwic, is a village and community beside the Menai Strait between Bangor and Caenarfon in Gwynedd, North West Wales.
