H. Wekken (German, active mid 19th Century) - Architectural Helical Staircase Model in Original Glazed Case.

Signed and dated H. Wekken auf Dörnten, 1860, underneath the bottom step.

Carved and stained wood.

An apprentice's masterpiece model, made by a craftsman who signed H. Wekken from the town of Dörnten in the Municipality of Liebenburg, at that time in the Kingdom of Hanover. Models of helical and spiral staircases were made in several countries in 19th Century. There is a collection of French staircase models at the Musee de Compagnonnage in Tours, and a significant collection held at the Cooper Hewitt Museum (New York) which was acquired as The Eugene & Clare Thaw Gift.
