Circa 1890
Genus: Podocnemis expansa or Testudine
The Arrau river turtle is the largest freshwater turtle in South America. It is found mainly in the Amazon basin although it is occasionally seen as far away as Trinidad.
These turtles were much favoured by sailors in the 19th century and earlier. One turtle could feed an entire crew. By removing the upper skutes and polishing the remaining carapace a beautiful blond finish to the shell was achieved. The finished shells were then brought home to Europe where they were much sought after.
Electrified with both wall and stand fittings.
