Late 17th century walnut cassone.

Lovely cassone with classical form, the beautiful figuring of the oak creates subtle, decorative patterning and the simple mouldings give a light, contemporary feel.
The rich, lustrous patina that it has developed over time is another main feature.
It would sit really well in a contemporary interior.
It has a copious amount of storage and has a lovely dry clean surface inside.
Beautifully made using 1 3/4" thick planks of oak which is very unusual, invariably cassones have much thinner planks and have cracks and fissures.

The plank top with cleated ends and a solid moulded edge. Original hinges revealing an interior with candlebox. The lock removed. The front with a waist moulding and original escutcheon. The bottom moulding and bun feet are later replacements. Excellent original colour and patina. Second half of the 17th century.

The simple form of this cassone is very pleasing, and does not distract from the fabulous, rich, lustrous patina that it has developed over time which is its main feature.

Internal measurements side to side interior length including candlebox 46 1/2 in, candlebox interior 6 1/2" wide, interior depth front to back 20".

1650 to 1700 Probably French.

Medium: Walnut.
