A GILTWOOD CHIPPENDALE PERIOD LOOKING GLASS
BRITISH CIRCA 1760
Gilding probably some original and some later but none recent; glass early 19th century.
The concept of quiet elegance is not usually associated with the Rococo style, but this piece manages to achieve just that. Sinuous movement, natural world motifs, deep undercutting in the wood, copious detail (which repays frequent viewing) are all present and correct, but put together with a mastery of easy eloquence both in design and execution.
