Gilt Centre Seconds English Cylinder.

SignedPeter Smitton, London.
Circa: 1790.
Diameter: 53 mm.
Depth: 14 mm.

A late 18th Century English centre seconds cylinder in a gilt consular case.  Full plate fire gilt movement, signed and numbered gilt dust cover pierced to reveal the regulator disc and endstone.  Pierced and engraved masked cock with large diamond endstone in a blue steel setting, silver regulator disc.  Plain three arm steel balance, blue steel spiral hairspring.  Polished steel cylinder with original banking pin, unusually large brass escape wheel. White enamel dial with centre seconds, Roman numerals and fine seconds track at the edge. Gold hands, the seconds situated between the minute and hour hands.  Plain gilt metal consular case both back and front bezel opening on the same hinge, dust proof shuts.  Inner dome cut away to reveal the dust cover, maker’s mark “GMR”

In excellent overall condition.  Peter Smitton, 12 Crown Street, Russel Square.  A silver pair cased watch by him with later serial number (305) is listed as being hallmarked London 1790.  The case is constructed in a similar manner to pocket chronometers of the period with dust proof shuts.  Some effort has been made to keep the watch as slim as possible by dispensing with the inner dome, the dust cover taking its place.  The case back has also been countersunk to allow clearance for the large diamond endstone.
