An elegant Regency mahogany and green velvet upholstered ‘Spanish’ armchair by Gillows.

English Circa 1825.

Of scrolled form, recently upholstered in a green velvet within a moulded frame, having conforming velvet covering to the padded carved and scrolled arms, each having carved roundel patrea.

Supported on splay shaped legs surmounted by fan carved brackets with the whole being raised on brass and leather wheeled castors.

A fine example of Gillows famous ‘Spanish’ armchair with a particularly good choice of timber. Reupholstered by our workshop in a traditional manner with shallow tuffs.

Gillows ‘Spanish’ chair was a very elegant and contemporary chair of its time. Gillows cleverly designed the fan spandrel-like brackets to the underside of the chair hiding their true function which was to strengthen the seat frame.

Literature Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840 by Susan E. Stuart page 230 Plate 224.
